Contact between Leverkusen and Oulu was formed 40 years ago in 1968. The twin town agreement was the start of a history of travel and meetings which would have been unthinkable without the strong support of the Finland friends within the community. The mutual curiosity about the other distant partner town has remained constant over the decades. Journeys of more than 2000 kilometres have always been rewarded with a wealth of impressions and hearty hospitality.
The relationship to the oldest of Leverkusen's twinnings has gone through many changes. Today, both cities co-operate closely under the heading of a unified Europe. Especially, the economic contacts are very important today.
